2012 – 6 Best Gadgets that Defined CES | Cheaper tablets, thinner laptops and an array of sleeker TVs stood out at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. More than 140,000 people gathered there this week, for an event that’s growing despite the absence of Apple and more recently, the decision by Microsoft to make this the last year it participates.

A bevy of celebrities, including 50 Cent, Will.i.am, and Kelly Clarkson, stopped by to add glitz to the proceedings —but they were hardly the stars of the show. Here are some of the more significant gadgets that shined at CES:

1. Cheaper tablets

The industry’s enthusiasm for tablets was considerably tempered this year compared to last, when more than a hundred manufacturers thought they could capitalize on the iPad’s success with their own models based on Google Inc.’ Android software. Sales were disappointing, in large part because Apple prices the iPad relatively low compared to the cost of making it. Then, late last year, Amazon.com Inc. demonstrated that you can take on Apple by selling a smaller, barebones tablet for $199. Analysts believe Amazon sold millions of Kindle Fires in little more than a month.

Now, Asian manufacturers are hoping to jump on Amazon’s bandwagon. One of those companies, Taiwan’s AsusTek Computer Inc., showed off a tablet with a Fire-sized screen and said it would sell it for $249. It’s considerably more powerful than the Fire, sporting a premium “quadcore” processor. Still, one of the things that made the Fire a success — Amazon’s library of e-books, music and movies — will be missing.

2. Nokia Lumia 900

In recent years, the world’s largest phone maker, Finland’s Nokia Corp., has practically been a no-show in the U.S. market. That’s hurt the company badly. Now, it hopes to come back with smartphones that run Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Phone software. The Lumia 900 is its first such phone for the AT&T network, and the first Nokia phone to use AT&T’s faster wireless “LTE” network. In a sign of how much is riding on these phones, both the Microsoft and Nokia CEOs showed up for Monday’s announcement. The companies didn’t announce price or availability. T-Mobile USA, a smaller carrier, started selling a more modest Lumia this week.

3. Lenovo K800

While Nokia’s been shut out of the U.S. phone market, Intel Corp., the world’s largest chipmaker, has been shut out of phones entirely. Its PC chips use too much power to go into a smartphone: they’d drain the battery in no time. That’s a big problem for the company, since PC sales are flat in the developed world, while smartphone sales are exploding. Now, Intel says a new line of chips is ready for smartphone use, and Lenovo Corp. of China is the first to take them up on it, with a smartphone to be sold in China in the second quarter. Outwardly, it’s indistinguishable from any other touchscreen phone, and it runs Android.

Motorola Mobility, the phone maker that’s being bought by Google, also committed to making phones and other devices with Intel chips. Without offering many details, the company said the new devices will be on the market in the second half of the year.

4. OLED TVs

Both LG and Samsung showed off 55-inch TVs with screens made from organic light-emitting diodes rather than the standard liquid crystals or plasma cells, and said they’ll on sale this year. They didn’t say what they would cost, but analysts expect the price to be upwards of $5,000.

The sets are long-awaited. OLED TVs have been on the horizon for some time, but they’re difficult to manufacture in large sizes. They provide a high-contrast picture with highly saturated colors. They can also be very thin: LG’s set is just 4 millimeters thick, or one-sixth of an inch.

5. Ultrabooks

Intel created the “ultrabook” as a marketing term for thin, light and powerful laptop computers. They’re essentially the Windows versions of Apple’s MacBook Air. PC makers have embraced the term enthusiastically. As a result, there were scores of ultrabook models on display at the show.

Two that stood out were the Lenovo Yoga, which has a touch-sensitive screen that bends backward to fold over completely, turning the device into a large tablet. It will launch with the new Windows 8 operating system later this year. The HP Envy 14 is a more conventional luxury model, and goes on sale Feb. 8, but has two details that set it apart: a sensor for Near-Field Communications Chips (which means you can transfer information from a similarly equipped phone by tapping it to the PC) and an audio chip that can communicate with some headphones to provide much better audio quality than Bluetooth. The Envy 14 will cost $1,400.

Bob O’Donnell, an analyst with research firm IDC, believes ultrabooks are “not a fad.” ”We absolutely see ultrabooks as being the future of notebooks,” he said. However, O’Donnell thinks ultrabooks will really take off once they are priced at about $800, closer to the price of regular laptops.

6. Canon G1 X

The Japanese camera maker revealed a compact camera that pushes into professional camera territory. Its G line of relatively large compact cameras has been popular among enthusiasts, and the G1 X extends the range by including an image sensor that’s more than six times larger than other models in the range. Sensor size is the most important factor for a camera’s image quality, far more than the number of megapixels — 14, for the G1 X. It’s the first camera to use a sensor of this type, which is only 20 percent smaller than the “APS-C” sensors used in single-lens reflex cameras, or SLRs (though some luxury compacts from other manufacturers use APS-C sensors).

The G1 X will have a 4x zoom lens that retracts into the metal body, and will sell for $800.

If you have an affinity for yachting and $100+ million in disposable income, besides considering Roman Abramovich’s Megayachts, the Maltese Falcon is all you. Should your preference lean towards a modest one week rental of the mega-yacht, it should only set you back about $600,000. For the rest of us aspiring mega-yacht owners that may never have the pleasure of boarding such a beautiful specimen, there are plenty of pictures to nod in disbelief at. Enjoy!

Although the Maltese Falcon is the largest sailing yacht in the world when measured on deck (LOD – Length On Deck), at 305 feet in length, Eos is the largest private sailing yacht in the world overall (LOA – Length Over All). The Maltese Falcon sports what is called a DynaRig, which means it is effectively a square rigger, and each of the three freestanding masts support six yardarms, which are connected rigidly to the mast.

The yacht’s 25,791 square feet (2,400 square meters) of sails are set between the yards in such a way that when deployed there are no gaps to the sail plan, enabling each spar’s sails to work as a single airfoil. Unlike a conventional square rigger, the yards have a built in camber of 12%, and the sails are trimmed to the wind direction by rotating the entire mast, which is operated by a sail control system on the bridge. When not deployed, the mega yacht’s sails furl right into the mast itself

It is also efficient, reaching nearly 20 knots under sail alone. The Maltese Falcon’s interior is as luxurious as you’d expect, of course, with the main feature being the atrium. Here, the three decks are united by a circular stairway, surrounding the main mast, and creating a spiraling effect. This is all enhanced by natural light streaming in from the top to the lower decks through transparent floors. The main deck of the Maltese Falcon is a big open space with a main saloon, a huge aft-cockpit, two studio areas and an impressive dining room.

For sleeping there are five lower deck staterooms and one passage cabin on the upper deck with a private sun bathing area, and direct access to the mega yacht’s wheelhouse. Her revolutionary sailing system – the DynaRig – set a new milestone in yachting history: three self-standing and rotating masts hosting 15 sails for a total sail area of 25,791 square feet for unrivaled, performance maneuverability and record-shattering speed; she can complete Atlantic crossings in ten days.

]]> GPS tracking system is nothing but a system that allows you to know the specific location of a vehicle. This system was primarily used for military and security purposes to track the location of the vehicles of the enemy but around few years back it was made available to the general public also. There are several types of GPS system available in the market. However, the most common and useful is gps fleet tracking.

GPS tracking system works through a gps tracking device and a corresponding software application. Gps tracking system is a small box that is almost the size of a wallet or slight bigger than it. It is generally made of metal or plastic and has an antenna in some cases. This device needs to be placed in the vehicle or any moving object or person whose location is to be known. The primary purpose of this system is to receive the information regarding the location of the object or the vehicle and transmit the same to the Gps software application. As a result the user can easily know the whereabouts of his vehicle without any extra effort.

Some years back, mobile devices with GPS system had gained some popularity, but they were unsuccessful. The reason for their failure was that mobile batteries are not reliable as it can go dead anytime, they can also be turned off, they are easy to tamper with, and it is not necessary that the mobile device and the driver are at the same place. Hence reliable tracking could not be processed. On the other hand, Informer Lite for tracking vehicles is more reliable as it is a hard ware device and is wired into the vehicle or the moving object.

Informer Lite GPS Tracking System’s 3D Birds Eye View

The remarkable feature of Informer Lite for tracking vehicles is its software. The software is clubbed with an array of different features, which aids the user to customize his needs as desired. The software has a feature called rapid tracking that allows continuous tracking. As soon as this feature is switched on, the map is refreshed every 30 seconds and the real time movement of the vehicle can be viewed. Then there is a feature called Vehicle routing that assists to route the vehicle to the nearest destination with the help of step by step directions. Just choose a location and the software shall locate the closet vehicle. Following are some screenshots on the Informer Lite GPS Fleet Tracking System Software:

Humans have always known sun for its scorching heat but researchers and technology gurus are now changing the way we look at sun. Research scientists in Tunisia and Morocco are now working on a new innovative refrigerator that would use sun’s scorching heat and light and convert it to cool large factories that are involved in food packaging and frozen foods. As per the reports and surveys done by various industrial organizations it has been found that large industries and factories consume a lot of electrical power to keep their products cool and to avoid them from perishing.

Although it sounds very contradicting to everyone, but researchers at Fraunhofer Institute of Solar Energy Systems ISE are now working on solar refrigeration technology that does not consume electricity but instead they take all their power from sunlight. Scientists all over the world now believe that most of the new age technology has to be on solar power because that would bring down the level of electricity consumed by these giant machines in large factories and industries all over the world. With the help of such giant solar refrigerators companies and manufacturers of perishable commodities will be able to bring down their cost of production and also contribute indirectly to make this planet a better place to live in.

These solar refrigerators are ideal for those companies where there is no electricity because they are far away from the city and even where temperatures are really high. The concept has not been revealed as of now but scientist have confirmed that they use water-glycol mixture that will absorb heat from the sunlight and pass it on to the mechanism inside the refrigerator that will keep the solar refrigerator in working condition without any problems irrespective of the season or time of the day.

Evolta robot, which is powered by Panasonic’s Evolta batteries, claimed to be the world’s longest-lasting AA alkaline battery cells. The Evolta robot will challenge to cycle the racing course of the 24 hours of Le Mans in France. With that, Panasonic is attempting to set a new world record and in the process prove just how good its Evolta AA batteries really are.

Panasonic Evolta Robot

The “Evolta racing robot” is fitted with two Evolta AA batteries and is capable of hitting speeds of up to 1.3km/h. The world record attempt will see the robot guided around the Le Mans racing circuit by an infra-red beam emitted from the back of a car. The aim is to keep circling the track for 24hrs just like in the real race and in so doing setting a record for the longest distance travelled by a remote-controlled robot. The real test is for the batteries, however, with the question being will they last the full 24hrs?

Although this is obviously a challenge just to get publicity it does show that Panasonic is very confident about the lead they have over other battery manufacturers in this battery class. Holding a world record allows a lot of marketing opportunities and this is just the latest. I bet there are a few more planned to keep Evolta in the headlines.

For example, Dell and HP only offer them on a handful of desktops and laptops; Apple doesn’t provide them on Macs. Most hard drives, in turn, only support USB and Firewire. If you will move large files back and forth and plan to buy a higher-end desktop or laptop in the next year or so, an eSATA-compatible drive could be a good investment.

Otherwise, stick with USB or Firewire. The latter connection is especially useful on most Macs, where it keeps too scarce USB port open. Another tip is getting a “bus-powered” drive, which will run off your computer’s power supply and won’t need its own wall outlet.

Many science fields like physcis, mechanics and space have reached their quantum level and the knowledges are very common to even a layman. But, have you wondered what is quantum internet and how it works? Let’s say Adam has a message he wants to send to his friend Jack. He encrypts it with a “key” – a sequence of 0s and 1s that unlocks the message. In quantum encryption, he sends this key using one of two intertwined alphabets. An eavesdropper has to guess which alphabet to read. A wrong guess and he’ll be spotted.

Weird Laptop

Here, our alphabets are shape (a circle means a 0, a triangle a 1) and color (green means 0, orange means 1). Jack reads the shape alphabet – Adam’s message of 1, 0, 0 is encoded as “triangle, circle, circle” – and later confirms that Jack sent the key as shapes.

But if an eavesdropper tries to read the message, half of the time he’ll read the wrong alphabet (a typical key requires thousands of such guesses). When he does, the quirky rules of quantum mechanics dictate that reading one alphabet randomizes the information in the other. When Jack checks with Adam later, he’ll quickly spot the eavesdropper.
