Every year, million gallons of watermelons are wasted during farm’s harvest. Motivated by this fact, a research team from US biotechnology centre has conducted an experiment with hypothesis which stated whether the wasted watermelons can translate into energy or not.

The result is very shocking. As a matter of fact, watermelon juice is about 10 percent sugar by volume, and about half the concentration can produce ethanol. It also has amino acids that provide a crucial source of nitrogen for yeast to feed on during fermentation. The team calculated that they could make about 2.5 million gallons of ethanol each year from waste melons, and this number is indeed will be new alternative of fuel energy in United States as well as the world.

Comparing to other fruits which need a lot of water for producing the energy, the team suggests that rejected watermelon juice could drastically cut down on water usage, supply needed nitrogen, and even add some sugar to the mix.
