As noted by the photographer “The numerous sandstone arches produce natural windows into the sky. So it offers the perfect setting to unify Earth and Heaven in a series of photographs using long time exposures on dark, moonless nights. This TWAN photo captures the graceful arc of star trails through the timeless geologic picture frames of Arches National Park“. Photographer: Fred Espenak/Mreclipse.com.

Bright stars of Alpha and Beta Centauri, the Southern Cross, and the Coalsack dark nebula appear in the right along the fading Milky Way band. This pacific paradise in the southern hemisphere is Mangaia, the most southerly of the Cook Islands. This volcanic remnant has the distinction of being the oldest island in the Pacific dating back to about 18 million years ago. As noted by the photographer, Tunc Tezel “I traveled to this 10 km wide island with only 500 Polynesian residents because the total solar eclipse path of 11 July 2010 was passing over this location.

What the photographer says:

‘When I travelled to see the total solar eclipse of 11 July 2010, I stayed in Oneroa village on the west coast of Mangaia, Cook Islands. This is how the sky looked from a relatively open area just outside Oneroa village.’

Hutech modified Canon 5D DSLR camera with a 24 mm lens – What it shows:

Forming a dramatic backdrop to a tropical skyline, the Milky Way galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars in a disc-like structure. Our Sun lies within the disc, about two-thirds of the way out from the centre, so we see it as a bright band encircling the sky. This southern hemisphere view highlights dark clouds of dust that aboriginal Australian astronomers called the ‘Emu in the sky’.

What the judges say:

Will Gater says: ‘This beautiful image has a truly magical feel to it. I love how the rich star fields of the Milky Way appear to follow the line of the horizon. Look closely and you’ll see many pink nebulae nestled within our galaxy’s spiral arms.’

What Flickr members say:

Ayiomamitis says: ‘WoW!…Truly outstanding in every sense of the word. Great composition and equally great execution.’

Come see this. It is not that hard to imagine this. Note: The background is the “eye” of the Jupiter. Enjoy!

Also, see this video. The foreground horizon imagery in the video makes it look like Jupiter would take up the entire sky, but as it turns out they’re using a zoomed in view of ~15°. It would be big, but not that big. What do you think?

I thought this was an example of a Halocline, which is a cline caused by a strong, vertical salinity gradient within a body of water. However, a few people have commented that a Halocline is more of a horizontal phenomenon and this is more vertically oriented.

I am pretty confident that what you are seeing is a result of the melting glaciers being composed of fresh water and the ocean has a higher percentage of salt causing the two bodies of water to have different densities and therefore makes it more difficult to mix. I’m told they will eventually mix given enough time. Anyway, whatever it is, the merging oceans surely an amazing nature event.

The first amateur photo of Saturn. Not too bad eh?

This is truly a new discovery. Some people suggested that to point it at the moon, having a look at the “alien” bases up there and confirm if its made of rock, or Swiss cheese or has an atmosphere or not. Many knows what NASA already says about the moon but at the same time, since NASA are a lying bunch of ***wads, people like some real information on the moon. This could be the alternative. For those who don’t see it yet, Mystery in front of the Full Moon.
